The Jackalope

The Legend

The Jackalope (Lepus-temperamentalus) is one of the rarest animals in the world. A cross between a now extinct pygmy-antelope and a species of Great Plains rabbit, they are extremely shy unless approached. None have ever been captured alive but some photographic evidence has been used to prove their existence.

Known by Native Americans as "deerbunnies", it wasn't until the early 1960's that the modern more fearsome name of "jackalope" was adopted.

While tales told to early settlers on the Great Plains described the jackalope as aggressive and unpredictable creatures, those few who have had contact with them describe curious, fun-loving herbivores more intent on bounding across the plains that attacking others.

[Footnote: Jackalopes are, in fact, fictional creatures whose sole purpose is to make you smile!]
